Dr Sian Mckenzie

Sian has held several senior positions within the NHS over the past two decades, before developing her private practice. She qualified in 2008 and has since then worked right across the life span clinically, with children through to older adults. She has experience of treating a range of psychological difficulties including anxiety, OCD, low self-esteem, eating disorders, self-harm, depression, trauma, bereavement and loss. She is well versed in assessing risk as well working with clients who have complex presentations, including personality disorders.

Sian tends to work with cognitive models such as CBT and ACT, although her specialist area of interest is in trauma interventions with a focus on EMDR.

Over the years, she has specialised in the psychological aspects of health-related problems, such as chronic fatigue. And worked extensively within psychological services offering support to people suffering with cancer, including palliative care. Sian has expertise in psychometric and neuropsychological assessment, having worked in brain injury services. She has also provided expert witness testimony for clients, on cognitive capacity.

Sian is an experienced leader, having managed numerous multidisciplinary teams, supervised trainees and qualified psychologists, provided training and consultation to staff teams and clients alike. Alongside her private work, she is also currently employed by Cardiff University within their Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, on every sphere of the course. She supports trainees, coordinates placements, liaises with supervisors, teaches, marks and moderates coursework and supervises research projects. She is also the lead for the service user and carer group, which is an integrative part of the course.

Sian has published extensively in the field of psychological health and cancer.
