Focal Psychoanalytic Therapy works at the same level as Schema-Focussed Therapy and therefore there are overlaps between these two models.
It identifies a central conflict arising from early experience that is being re- enacted in adult life, causing mental health difficulties. However, unlike CBT and Schema-Focussed Therapy, there is little focus on actively developing practical skills. Rather, its overall aim is to develop insight into emotional conflicts originating in childhood. There is a strong emphasis on the relationship between client and therapist.
